NI PEARS- Emergency Eye Care Service

New urgent Eye Care Service

Waveney Eye Care NI now have two Optometrists who are fully trained and accredited to provide the new emergency eye care service available to patients. The service allows your local Optometrist to be your first port of call if you have red or sore eyes or if you think you have got something in your eye.

What is NI PEARS?

NI Pears is a service provided by accredited optometry practices for patients who develop a sudden eye problem.

Over 100,000 patients in Northern Ireland attend hospital annually with eye problems, but many could be dealt with close to home by a local optometrist, freeing up hospital eye service appointments for more serious cases.

The NI PEARS service is for patients who develop a sudden eye condition such as:

  • Red eye (s)
  • Pain and/or discomfort in the eyes, or around the eye area
  • Sudden reduction in vision in one or both eyes
  • Recent onset or sudden increase of flashes and/or floaters in one or both eyes
  • Suspected foreign body in the eye

Appointments are available during normal working hours and you will be seen within 48 hours.

What happens at an NI PEARS assessment?

The optometrist will discuss your eye problem including the symptoms you may have, any history of eye problems and related medical history. You will be given an eye assessment to enable the optometrist to investigate your condition. The optometrist will explain your condition and may:

  • Give advice and treatment if required. If the optometrist recommends an eye medication they will either direct you to your pharmacist to purchase the medication or give you a form to take to your GP to have a prescription issued. The optometrist may also recommend a follow up appointment.
    Or
  • Refer you to your GP if your eye condition is related to your general health
    Or
  • Refer you directly to the hospital eye service if the condition is more serious.

Is your vision good enough to drive?

Driving & Vision

To meet the legal vision standard to drive you must be able to read a car number plate from 20 metres away. Have you checked that you can do this since you passed your driving test? Your vision changes all throughout your life and it is important that you ensure that your vision remains good enough to drive. Having a routine eye test allows your Optometrist to check your level of vision and eye health to make sure that you still meet the driving standards.

Currently, drivers are tested on their sight before their driving test by being asked to read a car number plate, at a distance of 20 metres. If they need glasses or contact lenses to pass this test, they are required to wear them for driving. A driver must also notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) if they have certain eye or general medical conditions, or if they are advised by an optometrist or a medical practitioner that they should no longer drive. Once a driver reaches the age of 70, the DVLA requires them to declare whether they are fit to drive every three years.

Wearing the right glasses to help your vision in poor lighting whilst night driving and having anti-glare coatings put on your glasses can all help to optimise your driving vision. Call in to book an eye test or get a leaflet on “Driving & Vision.”

Back to school eye tests for children

Good eyesight is crucial in making sure a child develops to their full potential both at school and socially.  It’s especially important to look after children’s eyes – the eye is still developing throughout early childhood so if problems are treated early, it can make a lasting difference. Yet research shows that around 20% of school-aged children have an undiagnosed vision problem (1). It’s never too early to have a sight test, visiting an optometrist will mean you can spot and manage vision problems that may affect your child’s development.

How do I know if my child has an eye problem?

Some eye conditions do not display any signs or symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to take your child for a sight test. Signs which may show there is a problem with a child’s sight include:

  • An eye appearing to drift inwards or outwards
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Behavioural problems
  • Headaches
  • Sitting too close to the television
  • Frequent eye rubbing

Eye tests are FREE for all children under 16 and 16-18 year olds in full time education.

World Glaucoma Week- Waveney Eye Care Opticians NI

Glaucoma – Eye Care – Ballymena

World Glaucoma Week

World Glaucoma week runs from March 12th -18th. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause progressive damage of the optic nerve at the point where it leaves the eye to carry visual information to the brain. Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness worldwide. It is estimated that 4.5million people globally are blind due to glaucoma.

There are several types of glaucoma. Some forms of glaucoma may occur at birth (“congenital”) or during infancy and childhood (“juvenile”); in most cases however, glaucoma appears after the 4th decade of life, and its frequency increases with age. There is no clearly established difference in glaucoma incidence between men and women.

If left untreated, most types of glaucoma progress towards gradually worsening vision and may lead to blindness. There are no symptoms or warning signs you would notice. Once developed, visual damage is mostly irreversible, and this has led to glaucoma being described as the “silent blinding disease” or the “sneak thief of sight”. This is why it is vital for you have regular eye test so your optician can look for early changes in your eyes.

Children’s eyesight – World Book Day

World book day is all about getting children and young people into bookshops and encouraging them to read.

To be able to read well, your child needs to have good vision. 1 in every 5 children has a vision problem and many of those go undiagnosed. Often children don’t know that their vision is blurry as the problem has maybe come on very slowly or they are simply used to it and don’t know any different.

All children 18 and under in full time education are entitled to a FREE annual eye test. We recommend coming in each year to make sure that their vision remains good and so that we can check that their eye muscles, colour vision and eye health are good too.

Help your child enjoy reading and book them an eye test today!
